Bleeding Again After Your Period Ended? What It Means, by Timing

The short answer: light spotting a few days after your period, or around the middle of your cycle, is often harmless. The timing gives the best clue to the cause. Bleeding after sex, bleeding that's as heavy as a period, or spotting that keeps happening should be checked by a gynaecologist.

Spotting or a second period?

Start by looking at how much blood there is:

What to check Spotting Bleeding like a period
Amount A few drops or streaks; a liner is enough Needs a pad, period panty or tampon
Colour Usually pink or brown Red, often turning darker
How long A few hours to two days Several days
What to do Note it down; see a doctor if it keeps happening See a doctor, especially if it's within three weeks of your last period

If it happens a few days after your period

  • Old blood clearing out. Sometimes a little blood stays in the womb or vagina and comes out a few days later as brown spotting. This is common and harmless.
  • Hormonal contraception. Spotting between periods is common in the first few months of starting the pill, an implant, an injection or a hormonal IUD, or after missing pills.
  • A period that hasn't quite finished. Some periods stop for a day and then return lightly for another day or two.

If it happens mid-cycle (around 10–16 days after your period started)

  • Ovulation spotting. A small number of people notice light pink or brown spotting for a day or so when they ovulate, as hormone levels shift.

If it happens close to when your next period is due

  • Implantation bleeding. If you've had unprotected sex, light spotting around the time your period is due can be an early sign of pregnancy. Take a test.
  • Your period starting early. Your cycle may simply be shorter this month.

Causes that can happen at any time

  • After sex: the cervix can bleed lightly from friction, but it can also be a sign of infection, polyps or changes to the cervix. Always get bleeding after sex checked.
  • Infections: sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, or a pelvic infection, can cause spotting, often with discharge, pain or a smell.
  • Polyps or fibroids: non-cancerous growths in the womb or cervix
  • The emergency contraceptive pill: can cause unexpected bleeding and change your next period's timing
  • Thyroid problems or PCOS: both can unsettle the cycle
  • Approaching menopause: cycles in your 40s often become irregular, with bleeding at odd times
  • Pregnancy complications: bleeding in early pregnancy can signal a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy

Rarely, bleeding between periods is linked to cervical or womb cancer. That's not a reason to panic, but it is why doctors take repeated unexplained bleeding seriously. Regular Pap smear screening helps catch cervical changes early.

When to see a doctor

Book an appointment if:

  • You bleed after sex
  • Spotting between periods happens for two or more cycles
  • The bleeding is heavy, like a period, within three weeks of your last one
  • You also have pain, fever, unusual discharge or a bad smell
  • You've been through menopause and have any bleeding at all

Get urgent help if you might be pregnant and have bleeding with strong pain on one side, shoulder pain, dizziness or fainting.

What helps in the meantime

  • Keep a record. Note the date, how much blood, the colour and anything else you noticed. It makes the doctor's visit much quicker.
  • Wear a liner. For light spotting, a panty liner or a reusable cloth pad keeps you comfortable without the bulk of a full pad.
  • Don't douche or use scented products. They can irritate the area and make infections more likely.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I bleeding a week after my period ended? It's often old blood, ovulation spotting or contraception-related. If it's heavy, keeps happening, or follows sex, see a doctor.

Can stress cause spotting? Stress can unsettle your hormones and change your cycle, which can sometimes cause irregular bleeding. It's still worth ruling out other causes if it repeats.

Is brown discharge after my period normal? Yes, usually. Brown means older blood that has darkened. It's common for a day or two after a period.

Can I get pregnant if I'm spotting? Spotting doesn't stop you from ovulating or getting pregnant. Use contraception if you don't want to conceive.
