The short answer: you can't reliably tell early pregnancy from a normal pre-period week by looking at your discharge. Both can bring more white or creamy discharge. The surest way to know is a pregnancy test, which most brands can detect from the first day of a missed period.
What normal discharge does before a period
Your discharge changes through your cycle as your hormones rise and fall. Around ovulation, roughly two weeks before your period, it often becomes clear, wet and stretchy, a bit like raw egg white. In the days after ovulation and leading up to your period, it usually becomes thicker, stickier and white or creamy, and you may notice less of it.
Just before your period starts, some people see a little brown or pink tinge as the first old blood comes through. That is usually your period arriving, not a cause for concern. Our period blood colour chart explains what different shades mean.
White discharge before your period: normal or not?
In the week or so before a period, discharge often becomes thicker, creamier and whiter. After ovulation, progesterone makes the mucus from your cervix thicker and stickier, so it looks white or cream and feels less slippery than it did mid-cycle. Some people notice more of it, others less. Both are normal. When it dries on underwear, white discharge can look slightly yellow, and that's normal too.
| What you notice | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Thick, white or creamy, no strong smell, no itching | Normal premenstrual discharge |
| Thick, white and lumpy like cottage cheese, with itching or soreness | Possibly thrush (a yeast infection) |
| Thin, grey-white, with a fishy smell | Possibly bacterial vaginosis |
| Green, yellow or frothy, with a smell | Possibly an infection such as trichomoniasis |
| More discharge than usual, and your period is late | Possibly early pregnancy; take a test |
If you think it might be thrush, our thrush guide explains the signs and treatment. If you have a lot of discharge, a panty liner changed every few hours keeps you fresh.
What discharge can be like in early pregnancy
In early pregnancy, many people notice more discharge than usual. It is typically thin, white or clear, and mild-smelling, without soreness or irritation. This happens because pregnancy hormones increase blood flow to the area. The trouble is that this looks very similar to normal pre-period discharge, which is why discharge on its own isn't a reliable test.
Some people also have implantation bleeding: light pink or brown spotting around the time a period is due. It is usually much lighter and shorter than a period.
Side by side
| What to look at | Before your period | Early pregnancy |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | Same or less than mid-cycle | Often noticeably more than usual |
| Colour | White or creamy, sometimes a brown tinge just before bleeding starts | White or clear; sometimes light pink or brown spotting |
| Texture | Thick and sticky | Usually thinner and milky |
| What follows | Your period starts, usually within a few days | No period, or only very light spotting |
| Other signs | Bloating, sore breasts, mood changes, cramps | Missed period, sore breasts, nausea, tiredness, needing to pee more often |
Notice how much the "other signs" overlap. Sore breasts, tiredness and mood changes are common to both, so they don't settle the question either.
When to take a pregnancy test
- If you know when your period is due: most home tests work from the first day of a missed period.
- If you don't know when it's due: test at least 21 days after you last had unprotected sex.
- If the test is negative but your period still hasn't come: wait a few days and test again. If it's still negative, see a doctor. Our guide to reasons for a late period may help.

Discharge that needs a doctor, pregnant or not
- Bright yellow, green or grey discharge (see yellow discharge after a period)
- A strong, fishy or unpleasant smell
- Itching, burning or soreness
- Thick, white, cottage-cheese texture with itching
- Pelvic pain, or bleeding after sex
If you are pregnant or might be, get urgent help for bleeding with strong tummy pain on one side, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting.
Staying comfortable in the meantime
Whether it's pre-period discharge or early pregnancy, extra discharge can leave underwear feeling damp. A breathable panty liner helps, changed a few times a day. If your period could start any time, a period panty means you won't be caught out. Wash the outside only, with plain water or a mild intimate wash, and skip scented sprays.
Frequently asked questions
Is creamy white discharge a sign of pregnancy? It can be, but it's also completely normal in the days before a period. A test is the only way to know.
How early does discharge change in pregnancy? Some people notice more discharge within a few weeks of conception, around the time a period would be due. Many notice no change at all.
Can I have discharge instead of my period? If your period is late and you only have discharge, take a pregnancy test. If it's negative, stress, weight changes, thyroid problems and PCOS are common reasons for a late period.
Is it normal to have no discharge before a period? Yes. The amount varies a lot between people and from cycle to cycle.
How many days before a period does white discharge start? It varies, but many people notice it in the week or so before their period.
